We’re donating £5 for every item sold to Friends of the Earth, an environmental campaigning community dedicated to the wellbeing and protection of the natural world and everyone in it.
Friends of the Earth have been a long established worldwide environmental charity who’s efforts have made many transformational changes since the 1970s. In 1971 when Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland began, ‘the environment’ was a marginal concern for a minority. Now it is mainstream, as the Earth’s climate stability weakens.
FOE help people turn their concerns into action for transformational change, connecting people across three nations with each other and with their counterparts across the globe. They are part of the millions-strong Friends of the Earth International, the world’s biggest grassroots environmental network.
Their vision by 2030 for the next generation is to enjoy an environment that's getting better: a safer climate, flourishing nature, and healthy air, water and food.
Their main efforts include:
Doubling UK tree cover and help combat climate chaos by 2045
Securing a fossil fuel-free England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Bringing a thriving diverse nature into people’s daily lives
Ensuring everywhere in the UK is within safe air quality limits
Working with the government to introduce a law to phase out single-use plastics.
Zen Bear is founded in Northern Ireland, and we absolutely love this emerald green country, but sadly the soils, water and air are in a bad way. We have the least protected environment in the UK and Ireland. It's a real worry for the 1.8m people living here and the many important wildlife sites in the country.
Climate change is happening now and it's destroying the environment & lives. The weather is getting wilder – crises like flooding in Northern Ireland will get worse. Burning dirty fuels like coal, oil and gas is leading to more global warming. We need to shift quickly to clean energy from the wind, waves and sun.
Environmental Facts about Northern Ireland
1.7million tonnes of sand a year are unlawfully extracted from Lough Neagh
Only 27% of electricity used in Northern Ireland comes from renewables
80% of Northern Ireland's transport budget is spent on roads
90% of protected sites are badly damaged by agricultural pollution
Northern Ireland has no independent Environmental Protection Agency. No National Parks. No law to cut climate-changing emissions.
The planning system leans heavily towards new development. And communities have too little say. Northern Ireland needs a climate change law to make sure this happens and FOE are going to change this.
